    Electric Sheep - 8/18/07

In the olden days of 1994 I bought myself a full sized futon. It had a cool wood frame that let it turn into a couch or sort of a lounge chair and made for very comfy sleeping in the dorm. Somewhere around 1998 I was urged to get a mattress for the avoidance of back pain. I got one that worked out alright and I just put it on top of the futon mattress and the frame. No point in scrapping the old stuff or dealing with a box spring. Needless to say I have had a very low to the ground bed for some time now. But now.. Almost 10 years later, it's time to get a new mattress. I went out to Grand Home Furnishings and picked up something that was moderately (if that can be said about a bed) priced. It had a nice deal where you get a stain protection plan etc etc.. Saturday it was delivered. And so begins the peeling back of bed layers on a journey to the dusty floor below my bed.

Step one was getting rid of the sheets. you will note that the mattress is that creepy shade of turquoise that is rarely ever seen anymore. The label on the mattress had a girl in a purple sweatband. I am not sure what that has to do with back support. Step two was my 'formerly 6" futon mattress. Note the lines in it from the slats below. Also note the enormous stain from a former cat spilling juice on it.

Here you see the frame. If folds up into this setup or you can have the part for your legs kicked out. Somewhat like a beach chair. Clearly marked in the middle section is the word 'SEAT' on each slat. In case you were curious as to where to sit. Also you see beside the nightstand I have used since I moved in. Made from a box of reams of paper with a few more on top. So classy!

The new shiny mattress (because it is wrapped in plastic) waited patiently as I pondered how I should set things up. After trying the mattress on top of the futon frame I decided against it. I didn't like being up that high. Partly because of the lower ceilings but mostly because I had become accustom to being 14" off of the ground. So right onto the floor it went. Fancy stain resistant mattress pad and all.
Liza doesn't quite know what to think of the new bed. And neither do I for that matter. It was very uncomfortable the first night but I was told that it requires a week or two be broken in. Hopefully it will turn out just fine and I can figure out what kind of bed frame I am going to build.
