    It's a doosie! - 4/3/05

    This is a long long long project. I decided that the stairs look crappy. So I was going to pull up the stairs, sand them, stain them, and then put them back. But then I saw how tough the stairs were nailed in. Some had screws, some had more than 9 nails scattered around sideways up and down. all over. many of the nails were these weird masonry nails. Not sure why. the revised plan was this. Pull everything out, cut new pieces, stain them, and put them back in.

    One by one the stairs popped out. I pulled them while Jul removed the nails from each tread. Once he was done, I took them back in and nailed them into their old spot so that there would be a way to get up the stairs. Needless to say, Liza was confused. At one point she somehow made it up the stairs with 6 consecutive steps missing... no clue how.

     

    What a mess it was under the stairs... Anyhow, Jul and I went out and bought some new treads, trim and wood for the risers. Treads mind you, come in 14 ft pieces. Fun stuff. The trim and risers were cut quite quickly. The rest took a little help from our friends Tim and Kos. I will put that info up soon
    Jul and I went out to Lowe's to find out what we could buy to replace things. 14' strips of tread and a large pile of 1"x8"s did the trick. The trim and risers were quick cuts. The treads however took a large team to measure and cut. Tim, Kos and Jul did all the cutting while I sanded the sides down of the sideboards. Sanding was a pain that made use of every sanding tool I could find. Also, it coated the upstairs with a nice layer of dust. In case you were wondering... the colors sanded off included brown, red, gray and red. Yep I said red.
