    Mood Lighting - 10/10/04

One of the skills I value most is my comfort with electrical work. I am not saying that I am really all that good with it, but more that I am confident in my ability not to get shocked. That physics degree was good for something!

As the days became shorter, I started noticing that I was walking home to a dark house. I thought I would get an automatic light on the front porch. Now here's a tip for you. You can get ceiling mounted lights that are motion detecting. You can get post lights that are 'dusk till dawn'. I bought one light that was reported to do both. Liza and I checked the instructions and found out the following. By default the light is in motion detecting mode. By turning the switch off and back on, it will toggle between motion sensing and 'dusk till dawn'. Handy, but when the sun comes up, it's back to motion sensing. Since it was as good as I could find, up it went. Liza agreed to keep an eye on me in case of an emergency.

Old wiring is uses black/brown wires instead of black/white not easy to identify when you can't see them well. I came up with a great solution to help out with my one person job. Here is a good shot of my high tech setup. You will note the strong support for my light source as well as the highest quality step ladder available to me.
This had to be one of the easiest installs. I am not quite sure why, but who cares, it works. OH I remember why it worked so well. It was because I decided that I didn't the light up there. I took it down and swapped it with the light on the side porch. Which took forever! Oh well, now it is on the side of the house instead of the front, but it is super cool. You never have to worry about taking out the trash in the dark, or having a tough time unlocking the door at night. Now if only I had a front porch light that would turn on at night
