    Cut it out - 4/12/08

Thursday I picked up my new R20 bulbs for the recessed lights in the living room. They were made by Phillips and of course were a special order. How sad is that. I special order lightbulbs. They use a little different tube to them. On the left you can see the typical spirally Sylvania. On the right is the 3 loop type Phillips. Yes, I believe that this is the technical term.
I put them in right away and man did they work great. Both brands do a good job but I really like the fact that they start up so quickly. Something strange though. When I screwed them in, one flickered briefly . But not the one that was being screwed in. As I went to sleep that night I turned off the lights and I noticed... they were dimmly glowing and one was flickering. So I unscrewed the flickering one. Then a second flickered, so I unscrewed that one, and the next and the next. Very odd. My only guess is that the switch they were on is a dimmer that works through the wireless for the ceiling fan. Checking the fixture with a multimeter I saw that there was actually a voltage going through the light socket when the switch was up. So that is where I headed next.

I started this project as I have most others. I cut the wall on the right side of the tv open. This handy duct tape/box combo helped keep things clean. Of course I didn't bother to make any other efforts to keep things clean. Now that I had a hole in the wall I sat down and thought out what I would do next. Here's the situation

The power goes up past the panel by the door and up to the crawlspace. There it splits at a wireless receiver and goes to the lights and the fan. In order to get the power to the lights independently, it needs to be split before the wall switch. One line goes through a switch at the panel and then up to the lights. The other line can go right to the fan. Make sense? Of course it does. If that doesn't help then just review the state of the wires at the panel.
Jul helped me with a coat hanger/string wire pulling trick and I spliced in one more wire to the hydra of wires at the junction box. Upstairs I changed the connections around and pulled out the wireless receiver. I put the wireless control into the new hole. I also plan to move the thermostat over there too. Some other day though. Oh... and I forgot. The lights still did the flickering thing.
