    Baby Cakes - 10/14-10/06

As a present for Odessa and Jonathan's new baby I offered to make a piece of furniture for her. They said they wanted a bookcase and here is what I came up with. It was a good design but hard to get working. As you can tell there are lots of parts that connect up at the top of it. It was tricky to get it all solid since I decided not to use nails or screws. Just glue on this one. Glue is great, but takes much longer to assemble.

It was assembled in stages. You can see how it went together by following along. I started by putting the top and bottom sections together. They are boards glued back to back, clamped and then trimmed around with a 1" board. Which helped to make it more stable. Next the top section was put together. All of this was easy. Since you could use clamps to do it all.

p>Putting the two top portions together wasn't easy and neither was putting on the sides. You can see that there were several parts where you needed to glue the top and side of a board. It got very tricky to clamp and glue in different ways and make sure that each part is aligned. All in all it wasn't easy, but it came out nicely.
