    If I were a rich man - 6/30/04

Today I found out that the insurance company won't cover me cause of the asbestos roof. So I found a new place that said they would, as long as the roof was in good condition. I decided it was time to get some shingles put back up, and make an attempt to clean the moss/mold. Step one, get a ladder.

Andrew saved the day by offering up his Willy to the cause. The 40' extension ladder was handled quite masterfully by his sturdy ride and boy scout knotting skills. All three of us went ahead and got the ladder on the front side roof. Andrew said his goodbyes and rushed off to see Spiderman 2. Shortly after Jeffrey rolled up in his ride and gave a good luck blink to us.

Once I put together the bleach spray, up I went. You can see the excitement on my face if you look very close. I did a lot of spraying and for some reason the canister was losing pressure so I had to pump constantly while I sprayed.

We quickly gave up on the idea of spraying the whole front roof this way. I just wasn't able to reach very much of the roof. The new plan was to move the ladder to the back and spray over the top. At this point the fumes of fun were getting to me.

The back of the house was much easier to manage. I went from one side to the other and sprayed over the top of the roof. It went quite well. The remainder of the spraying consisted of climbing up and down. Jul's evening consisted of holding the ladder, with his foot. "Hey Jul. Did you know that the only thing more boring than laying on a roof, spraying bleach... is to be the guy holding the ladder for the guy laying on a roof, spraying bleach."

Whew.. so it's all over. Oh wait.. no its not. Next I climbed up to get some shingles reattached. I hadn't ever done that before so I wasn't very good at it. I had a small puzzle of shingles to caulk up. We shuffled the ladder to the edge and I went up to tack things down. Once that was done, the ladder got shuffled even closer to the edge, and I leaned over the edge to tack on some siding that was knocked off. It was getting a little dark and I donned a nifty light. No caulk was left for the siding, (due in large part to my lack of skill) liquid nails picked up the slack. Unfortunately the tube was busted and I mostly had to put it on with my hands.

General mess is ok with me, but the asphalt caulk in combination with liquid nails was a bit much (note intential dumb look). I got the job done and climbed down the ladder without touching the rails. After an extended visit with some Lava soap, I was clean, but very very sore. Nothing like getting scraped up on shingles, caulked up with asphalt and then scrubbing it all off with pumice. Ouch
